Ghanaian-owned mining and exploration companies are calling on the government to intensify support for local participation in the iron ore sector, citing its potential to accelerate economic growth and create sustainable jobs.
The appeal comes after a historic milestone in Ghana’s mining industry, the successful completion of the first phase of iron ore exploration at Gyamruame in the Oti Region, conducted entirely by local expertise.
Mining remains a key pillar of Ghana’s economy, contributing significantly to export earnings, employment, and industrial growth.
However, large-scale mining ventures have historically been dominated by foreign companies, with limited involvement from wholly Ghanaian-owned firms.
That dynamic is now shifting, thanks to the breakthrough achievement by African Exploration Minerals Group (AEMG).
For the first time, a fully Ghanaian-owned company has overseen an iron ore project from initial exploration to the verge of potential mining operations.
The project forms part of the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation’s (GIISDEC) strategy to harness the nation’s iron ore reserves for industrial transformation.
Following the successful completion of phase one, AEMG handed over exploration data and samples to Intertek for advanced analysis, a crucial step toward determining the commercial viability of the deposit.
AEMG’s Chief Operating Officer, Samuel Frimpong, urged the government to create stronger policy and financial support mechanisms for indigenous mining companies. “If we want local firms to thrive and compete globally, we must equip them with the resources and opportunities to grow,” he stressed.
GIISDEC has praised AEMG’s work, highlighting that the successful exploration strengthens Ghana’s bargaining position in negotiations for future mining activities.
Deputy CEO for Operations and Finance, Philip Oppong Amponsah, encouraged more local investors to channel capital into mining, noting that the sector holds significant untapped potential.
Local leaders in the Kadjebi District have welcomed the development, expressing optimism that it will bring jobs, improve livelihoods, and stimulate broader socio-economic growth in the region.
