African policymakers and telecommunications regulators have opened a five-day meeting in Ghana to coordinate a common continental position ahead of a key global conference that sets technical standards for digital technologies.
The African Telecommunications Union (ATU) , in collaboration with the Government of Ghana, is hosting the first African Preparatory Meeting for the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) 2028 from April 13 to 17 at the Palms Airport City Hotel in Accra.
The meeting marks the start of Africa’s formal preparations for the 2028 assembly, where international standards governing telecommunications networks, interoperability and emerging digital technologies are agreed.
Held under the theme “Strengthening Africa’s Common Position for WTSA-28,” the gathering brings together delegates from across the continent to align policy priorities and technical proposals. The effort is aimed at consolidating national positions into a unified African stance in global standard-setting processes.
The initiative adds to a broader push in Africa for more active roles in shaping international rules that underpin digital infrastructure and services, including next-generation networks and data systems.
Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, is serving as guest of honour at the opening of the meeting.
Outcomes from the discussions are expected to feed into subsequent regional engagements and technical submissions that will form Africa’s contributions to the 2028 assembly.
