Dr. Selorm Akaba, a Senior Lecturer and Coordinator of the Farmers Market at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) School of Agriculture, has shed light on the transformative role that digital technologies are playing in Ghana’s agricultural sector, particularly in empowering women farmers. During his address on the integration of digital solutions into farming practices, Dr. Akaba emphasized how these technologies are providing farmers with tools that boost productivity, improve market access, and help address the growing challenges posed by climate change.
“Thanks to digital platforms, farmers, including women, now have access to advanced technologies that were once beyond their reach. This newfound access has significantly enhanced their productivity and efficiency while also strengthening their market connections and financial inclusion,” Dr. Akaba remarked.

He elaborated on how women farmers, specifically, have gained from these digital tools. Traditional social and cultural barriers that previously hindered their access to essential farming resources are being dismantled. With the help of digital platforms, women farmers can now easily obtain farming inputs, sell their produce, and utilize mobile money and online payment systems—all without having to travel. Additionally, these platforms offer training on sustainable farming methods and precision agriculture, further empowering women in agriculture.
Dr. Akaba also highlighted the role of these technologies in helping farmers become more climate-resilient. By providing real-time weather forecasts and crop management advice, digital tools enable farmers to make data-driven decisions that protect their crops from threats such as extreme weather events or pest infestations like the fall armyworm. This helps them secure their yields and adapt to changing environmental conditions.

However, despite the clear benefits, Dr. Akaba acknowledged that there are still challenges. “Limited access to resources, particularly for women, remains a significant issue. Yet, digital platforms are beginning to close this gap by connecting farmers with service providers who offer affordable tools and services,” he said.
To promote further digital adoption in agriculture, Dr. Akaba called for policymakers and stakeholders to implement inclusive agricultural policies. He stressed the need for investment in digital infrastructure and expanded internet connectivity, especially in rural areas where farmers often lack access. He also pointed out the importance of developing offline-friendly solutions to address connectivity challenges in remote regions.

Dr. Akaba called for collaboration between private and public sector players to create integrated digital solutions, reduce costs, and enhance overall efficiency in agriculture. By working together, he believes stakeholders can unlock the full potential of digital technologies in transforming Ghana’s agricultural landscape.
