Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong has rejected the purported attempt to terminate his reappointment by the Chairman of the University Council, Prof. Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi.
The Vice-Chancellor who was also appointed as the Chairman of the Vice Chancellors Ghana barely a week ago in response to the University Council’s Chair letter indicated that Prof. Amonoo-Kuofi unilaterally decided without recourse to other council members and the University’s statutes.
He therefore emphasized that the mandated body to take such a decision; the University’s Governing Council to the best of his knowledge has not met to take any decision concerning his appointment hence the chair on his own accord cannot undo the earlier decision of the Council.
“This decision was made by you alone without recourse to other members of the Governing Council and no meeting has been held on this subject of termination of appointment. It is therefore not surprising that you intentionally failed to copy other members of the Governing Council,” parts of the statement signed by the Vice Chancellor read.
He further insisted that the mode of delivering the letter through his private WhatsApp renders the letter invalid since it goes contrary to the university’s convention of delivering official and important documents.
He said, “WhatsApp is not recognized as an official mode of communication. This clearly demonstrates that you did the instant letter without recourse to the laid down processes and procedure.”
He therefore insisted that he has total disregard for the Council Chair’s letter and will continue to hold himself as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast.
“Your conduct marks disrespect for the University and seeks to set a dangerous precedence where a Chair of the Governing Council can sit in his bedroom and individually rescind the decision of the University. I do not regard this letter as a decision of the Council and will therefore ignore same as non-binding and will not carry out the instructions indicated therein,” the letter signed by Prof. Nyarko Boampong emphasized.
