MTN Ghana has cautioned Mobile Money (MoMo) loan beneficiaries against defaulting on repayments, stating that the integration of Ghana Card details into SIM registration has made it impossible for borrowers to evade repayment by changing SIM cards.
Mr Dickson Amoung-Yam, Field Service Manager (Network) for MTN Ghana in Kumasi, said borrowers who obtained loans through their MoMo accounts and failed to repay would be traced through the Ghana Card used to register their SIM cards.
“Borrowers who take loans and refuse to pay can no longer escape because of the Ghana Card they used to register on their accounts,” he said.
Mr Amoung-Yam gave the caution in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of a media and stakeholder engagement organised by MTN Ghana in Sunyani.
He explained that, in the past, some customers obtained loans through their SIM cards and later discarded the cards to avoid repayment before acquiring new ones.
However, he said such practices were no longer effective because attempts to register a new SIM card would reveal the borrower’s identity through the Ghana Card-linked registration system.
Mr Amoung-Yam, therefore, urged customers who had accessed MoMo loans to repay them promptly to ensure that the revolving credit facility remained available to benefit other users.
He reaffirmed MTN Ghana’s commitment to delivering quality services, saying customer satisfaction remained at the centre of the company’s operations and continued to drive investments in network expansion and service improvement.
He encouraged customers to report service-related challenges to the company for prompt resolution.
Mr Amoung-Yam said MTN Ghana continued to expand its network coverage across the country, enabling users in remote communities, including farming areas, to make calls and send messages with greater ease.
He also urged customers to take advantage of the company’s digital applications, which provide access to various services and reduce the need to visit MTN offices, thereby easing congestion at service centres.
