The Western Region has received 11 of the 100 new buses procured by the government to strengthen public transportation across the country, a move expected to improve mobility and expand access to both intra-city and inter-city travel services.
The 29-seater buses were officially handed over to the Western Regional Branch of Metro Mass Transit (MMT) Limited in Takoradi by the Western Regional Minister, Mr. Joseph Nelson.
The allocation forms part of the government’s broader efforts to modernise Ghana’s transport sector, improve passenger convenience and provide relief to commuters on major urban and rural routes.
Speaking at the handing-over ceremony, Mr. Nelson described the arrival of the buses as a significant boost for transportation services in the region.
“The arrival of these buses marks a defining moment for us because we have been fortunate to receive 11 out of the 100 buses procured by the government. We can only be grateful to the President for this great initiative,” he said.
According to him, the investment reflects the government’s commitment to resetting Ghana’s transport system by improving access to reliable and affordable public transport services.
Mr. Nelson urged the management of Metro Mass Transit to establish effective maintenance systems to ensure the buses remain in good condition and serve passengers for many years.
He also advised drivers and conductors to adhere strictly to road safety regulations to minimise accidents and enhance passenger safety.
The Western Regional Manager of Metro Mass Transit, Albert Asarhin, welcomed the additional buses, noting that the new fleet would significantly improve the company’s operations across the region and beyond.
He explained that the regional branch had been operating with only eight buses, a situation that forced the suspension of services on some routes due to limited capacity.
“Previously, our buses were only eight, so we stopped operations on certain routes. With these additions, we will revive those routes and serve our passengers better,” he said.
Mr. Asarhin indicated that the newly acquired buses would be deployed on several key inter-city routes, including Takoradi-Accra, Takoradi-Tarkwa, Takoradi-Elubo, Takoradi-Kumasi, Takoradi-Obuasi, Takoradi-Dunkwa and Takoradi-Sandema.
He added that some of the buses would also serve communities within the Western Region, helping to improve connectivity and support economic activities.
The delivery of the buses is expected to enhance Metro Mass Transit’s capacity to meet growing passenger demand while contributing to efforts to improve public transportation nationwide.
