MTN Ghana’s Mobile Money Limited, in partnership with Forms Capital and Xtra MFS, has launched XCash and XBalance, aimed at providing accessible, flexible, and responsible financial services to millions of mobile money users across the country.
Speaking at the launch, Mr. Yaw Saifah, Banktech Manager at Mobile Money Limited, emphasized MTN’s commitment to democratizing access to financial services.
He said XCash and XBalance are designed to meet the credit needs of “our customers in real-time, enabling Ghanaians, especially those in the informal sector to access funds responsibly.”
XCash offers users short-term, flexible loans tailored to their specific needs, allowing them to borrow funds for as little as a single day and only pay interest for the days the money is used. XBalance, on the other hand, acts as an overdraft facility, allowing users to complete transactions even when their wallet balance is insufficient.
Mr. Jonathan Atuah, CEO of Forms Capital, explained the broader impact of this innovation, saying, “this is more than a product launch, it is a platform for transformation.”
“Too many Ghanaians remain outside formal financial systems. XCash and XBalance are built to serve this excluded majority, especially within the informal sector, by offering financial tools that fit their lives and spending patterns,” he said.
Mr. Ishmael Abbey, Head of Business at Forms Capital, noted that many customers dislike paying full-month loan interest when funds are only used for a few days.
“We’ are changing the game. If you borrow for two days, you pay interest for two days, nothing more,” he said.
He further elaborated on XBalance: “Imagine needing to pay a GHS 300 electricity bill, but you only have GHS 200 in your wallet. With XBalance, the additional GHS 100 is provided instantly to complete the transaction. It’s a safety net for everyday life.”
“Sustainability of the products depends on responsible usage. If repayments fail, it affects others’ ability to benefit from the service,” he said.
With over 17 million mobile money users, MTN sees these products as tools to empower everyday Ghanaians to live with greater financial freedom.
The company’s long-term vision is to create a financial ecosystem where access to credit and digital services is no longer a privilege but a basic right.
The launch of XCash and XBalance reinforces MTN Ghana’s position as a trailblazer in digital financial services, further supported by Forms Capital’s mission to digitize and democratize financial access.
