Telecel Ghana has begun a nationwide network expansion and modernisation programme aimed at improving service quality, increasing network capacity and delivering faster and more reliable connectivity to customers across the country.
The initiative commenced with the installation of new wireless technology at a telecommunications site in the Social Welfare area of Madina, where engineers are upgrading network infrastructure to enhance internet speeds and overall customer experience.
The expansion fulfills a commitment made by Telecel Ghana’s Chief Executive Officer, Patricia Obo-Nai, who announced in March that significant network improvements would commence in the second quarter of 2026.
Speaking on the project, the Director of Technology at Telecel Ghana, Mr Ebenezer Siebu, said the company was deploying advanced technologies to strengthen network performance and reduce congestion in areas experiencing high data traffic.
“We are building extra capacity on this site to reduce congestion and increase internet speeds for thousands of customers in Madina. As data usage continues to grow, these investments ensure our customers enjoy faster speeds, better voice quality and consistently stronger connections,” he said.
Mr Siebu disclosed that similar upgrades would be carried out at more than 100 high-demand sites across the country this year, while over 1,000 network sites would receive varying levels of enhancement under the broader modernisation programme.
According to him, the investment is intended to meet growing demand for mobile data services while preparing the network to support future digital technologies and services.
The company’s Health and Safety team was present during the commencement of the installation works to ensure compliance with operational standards and safety protocols.
Safety officers also engaged engineers and contractors working on the project, emphasizing the need to maintain strict adherence to workplace safety procedures throughout the rollout.
The Head of Networks at Telecel Ghana, Mr Anthony Sam, said the expansion programme represented more than a technology upgrade, describing it as part of the company’s commitment to delivering greater value to customers.
“At Telecel, we connect energies and that means making connectivity better for our customers to enjoy the value. As we improve the network in communities across the country throughout this expansion drive, we are approaching our work with passion, commitment and purpose as always,” he said.
Residents in Madina welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the upgrades would lead to improved network performance and better access to digital services.
One resident, Adiza, said she looked forward to enjoying faster internet speeds and a better online experience once the upgrades were completed.
“I use Telecel every day to watch videos on social media, so I am excited to see them improving the network here in Madina,” she said.
Telecel Ghana said the expansion programme forms part of its long-term strategy to strengthen digital connectivity and support the evolving needs of customers nationwide.
Since rebranding to Telecel Ghana, the company has significantly expanded its network footprint, increasing the number of sites from approximately 5,000 to about 9,000 across the country.
The latest investment is expected to further enhance network reliability and position the company to support the increasing demand for digital services, mobile connectivity and emerging technologies.
