More shares changed hands on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) last week, but the increased trading activity came alongside a general decline in share prices. During the trading week of September 7 to 11, 2026, a total of 34.59 million shares were traded, up 130.2% from the 15.03 million shares recorded the previous week.
The value of shares traded also rose sharply, increasing by 77.8% from GH¢93.32 million to GH¢165.94 million.
Despite the stronger trading activity, the market ended the week on a weaker note.
The GSE Composite Index fell 1.37% to 14,611.15 points, while the GSE Financial Stocks Index declined 2.69% to 7,607.46 points. Overall, the average share price fell by 5.01% during the week.
A significant portion of the week’s trading took place on Monday, September 7, when 20.48 million shares worth GH¢139.04 million were traded. This accounted for more than four-fifths of the week’s total value traded.
MTN Ghana remained the most traded stock by both value and volume, with GH¢26.74 million worth of its shares changing hands, while 3.90 million shares were traded.
GCB Bank also recorded strong activity, with GH¢12.75 million worth of shares traded. Its share price, meanwhile, rose 6.19% from GH¢39.55 to GH¢42.00.
CPC was the week’s biggest gainer, rising 10% to GH¢0.22, followed by EGL, which gained 7.20% to GH¢7.00. FML also gained 5.82% to GH¢14.00.
On the other side, several stocks recorded sharp declines. Access Bank led the losses, falling 24.71% from GH¢29.50 to GH¢22.21. Digicut declined 17.95%, Daspharma fell 17.36%, while Goil and Hords lost 14.63% and 14.46%, respectively.
The weaker week, however, comes against a much stronger performance for the market so far this year.
The GSE Composite Index remains up 60.57% year-to-date, while trading volume and value are also up 66.60% and 63.70%, respectively.
So, while last week’s figures showed a market that was busier but generally weaker on prices, the GSE continues to record strong growth compared with the beginning of the year.
