The Roman Catholic Church in Africa has launched a new volunteer opportunity for an experienced Website Developer and Designer as part of its communications volunteer programme aimed at strengthening the Church’s digital platforms across the continent.
The role, coordinated pro bono by APO Group, supports the communications work of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM), the governing body of the Roman Catholic Church in Africa. The position is open to candidates based in Africa or Europe and will be carried out remotely.
The volunteer role, which requires a commitment of two days per week for a minimum of six months, will focus on the design, development and ongoing maintenance of SECAM’s websites and digital platforms. While editorial content will be supplied by other team members, the developer will be responsible for technical implementation, site performance, usability, accessibility and visual consistency in line with SECAM’s brand standards.
SECAM said the initiative forms part of a broader effort to enhance its digital communications infrastructure as the Church continues to expand its pastoral, educational and social services across Africa.
Applicants are expected to have three to five years of professional experience in web development and design, with strong knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript, experience with at least one content management system such as WordPress, Webflow or Drupal, and familiarity with responsive design, UX/UI principles and accessibility standards. Experience with analytics, SEO optimisation and version control systems such as Git will be considered an advantage.
The programme operates across European and African time zones, and applicants from outside these regions will not be considered. Successful candidates will work closely with communications teams, content creators and project stakeholders to ensure SECAM’s digital platforms remain functional, engaging and accessible.
According to APO Group, the volunteer programme is designed to provide professionals with hands-on international experience while contributing to mission-driven initiatives. Volunteers gain exposure to large-scale digital platforms and have the opportunity to expand their professional networks across borders.
The Roman Catholic Church maintains one of the largest social service networks on the continent, operating more than 82,000 Catholic schools in Africa, educating over 30 million pupils, alongside nearly 14,000 healthcare and social care facilities, including hospitals, clinics, orphanages and centres for vulnerable groups.
APO Group cited data from the United Nations’ 2022 State of the World’s Volunteerism Report, which estimates that 862.4 million people volunteer globally, highlighting the growing role of volunteerism in professional development and social impact.
Applications for the role are open through an online form, with SECAM and APO Group emphasising that only candidates who complete the application process will be considered.
