The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has expressed grave concern over the escalating incidents of hooliganism and lawlessness in parts of the country following the conclusion of the 2024 general elections.
GUTA, which represents the interests of traders across Ghana, warns that these criminal activities pose a significant threat not only to state institutions but also to the country’s business environment and international reputation.
In a statement cited by The High Street Journal, the traders’ group condemned the attacks on public facilities and state institutions, noting the far-reaching implications for trade and investment in Ghana.
“We condemn these acts of violence and lawlessness in no uncertain terms, especially, the attacks on public facilities and state institutions, which could harm not only our institutions but also the image of Ghana and the Ghanaian people,” parts of the statement emphasized.
The Association underscored the critical importance of maintaining law and order to ensure a stable environment for commerce.
GUTA maintained that a peaceful and predictable business environment is the backbone of trade and economic growth urging swift action from the government and security agencies to prevent further disruptions.
The Union therefore supported President-elect John Dramani Mahama’s call for immediate intervention calling on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the security agencies to address the matter decisively.
The Association called for the identification, arrest, and prosecution of all individuals involved in these criminal acts to restore public confidence and safeguard Ghana’s economic prospects.
“We, therefore, add our voice to the call by the President-elect, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the security agencies to deal decisively with the matter and curb this act of lawlessness immediately,” GUTA noted.
The Union added, “all those involved in these criminal activities must be identified, arrested, and be made to face the full rigours of the law.”
Analysts have repeated several times that as Ghana continues to position itself as a hub for trade and investment in West Africa, maintaining peace and order to protect the nation’s hard-earned reputation as a stable business destination is very key.
The Association’s plea adds to growing calls from various stakeholders for swift action to curtail post-election violence and ensure a conducive environment for Ghana’s economy to thrive.
