Guinea-Conakry is emerging as West Africa’s newest oil and gas exploration hotspot as the country undertakes major reforms to attract investors and expand its energy base beyond bauxite.
The country’s national oil company, Société Nationale des Pétroles de Guinée (SONAP), is leading the charge to transform Guinea-Conakry into a competitive player within the MSGBC Basin, a geological zone shared with Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau that is gaining international recognition for its hydrocarbon potential.
While Guinea-Conakry has long been known for its vast bauxite exports, nearly 100 million tons shipped in the first half of 2025, attention is now shifting to oil and gas. Neighboring Senegal and Mauritania have already begun producing oil and gas from major projects operated by Woodside Energy, bp, and Kosmos Energy, and Guinea-Conakry is seeking to build on that regional momentum.
Under the leadership of Dr. Lanciné Condé, SONAP has enhanced its technical and institutional capacity since its establishment in 2021. The company now operates advanced field and mapping equipment and has created a national seismic data visualization center in partnership with SLB and TGS, housing more than 15,000 km² of 3D and 45,000 km² of 2D seismic data.
Early exploration activity has shown promising results. Wells such as GU-2B-1 and Sabu-1 have confirmed a working petroleum system in the Upper Cretaceous formations, indicating mature source rocks and hydrocarbon shows. Although previous deepwater drilling at Fatala-1 did not yield commercial production, experts say the geological similarities with oil-rich basins in Guyana and Suriname continue to inspire optimism.
To enhance investor confidence, SONAP has also introduced a national petroleum cadastre, identified 22 oil blocks for licensing, and launched tenders for a storage and product management platform and for achieving ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certifications, steps aimed at improving transparency and operational efficiency.
These efforts are expected to attract international attention at the upcoming MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power 2025 Conference and Exhibition, set for December 9–10 in Dakar, where SONAP will showcase Guinea-Conakry’s exploration opportunities and engage directly with potential investors.
With improved seismic data, regulatory clarity, and proactive reforms, Guinea-Conakry is positioning itself as the next major frontier in West Africa’s oil and gas industry, signaling a new chapter for the country’s resource development beyond mining.
