Trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) increased significantly during the week ended July 31, 2026, as investors exchanged more shares, pushing the total value of trades up by 251%.
The value of shares traded rose to GH¢168.92 million from GH¢48.12 million recorded in the previous week, while total trading volume increased by 158.2% to 29.73 million shares from 11.51 million shares.
The strong performance was largely driven by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector, which accounted for GH¢131.4 million, representing about 77.8% of total market value traded during the week.
MTN Ghana was the main contributor to the increase, recording GH¢131.26 million in trading value and 18.58 million shares traded, making it the most actively traded stock on the exchange.

Despite the surge in trading activity, the overall market value recorded only a marginal increase. Market capitalisation closed at GH¢292.51 billion, up 0.16% from GH¢292.06 billion the previous week.
The benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) also recorded a modest gain, rising 0.68% to close at 15,434.87 points, supported by price increases in selected equities.
However, the GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) declined by 0.52% to 8,238.07 points, reflecting losses among some financial sector counters.
Among individual stocks, HORDS recorded the strongest weekly gain, rising 50% from GH¢0.26 to GH¢0.39, followed by IIL, which gained 27.27% to close at GH¢0.84.
On the downside, ALLGH recorded the largest decline, falling 9% during the week, while other stocks including SIC and SOGEGH also recorded losses.
The strong weekly activity adds to the positive year-to-date performance of the exchange. Market capitalisation has increased by 70.02%, trading value has risen by 75.99%, and the GSE Composite Index has gained 7.27% since the beginning of the year.
The week’s performance shows renewed investor activity on the exchange, although trading remained concentrated around a few counters.
