The Ghana Integrated Aluminum Development Corporation (GIADEC) is confident that bauxite production will significantly increase, contingent on the approval of a new mining lease currently before Parliament.
The lease, once ratified, would allow the Ghana Bauxite Company (GBC) to expand its mining operations in Awaso, located within the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality in the Western North Region.
Speaking at a media workshop covering the 2021/2022 Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (GHEITI) report, Dr. Kwabena Mensah, Senior Technical Manager at GIADEC, highlighted the importance of this lease to the corporation’s vision of establishing an integrated aluminum industry. The Awaso mine is one of GIADEC’s four flagship projects aimed at transforming Ghana’s bauxite sector into a fully integrated aluminum industry.
Dr. Mensah noted that modernizing mining techniques and upgrading equipment would be critical in moving away from traditional methods, thereby improving efficiency and meeting targets for the aluminum industry.

He explained that “the Ghana Bauxite Company is required to meet some EPA conditions. We have added two more hills to ensure they meet the quantities and volume we expect for the integrated aluminum projects.”
The company is working judiciously towards achieving its goals, but Dr. Mensah emphasized that the expansion is a process, not a one-time action. “It’s a step, not a one-day thing. They are working judiciously to meet targets. There is a timeline, but they are really working. The mining processes will be improved,” he added.
GIADEC is also collaborating with strategic investors to expand the Awaso mine and develop a local refinery, a move aimed at adding value to the raw bauxite and creating jobs for the local workforce. The establishment of this refinery aligns with Ghana’s overarching goal of reducing raw material exports and focusing on sustainable economic growth.
Although the decision to approve the lease is pending, GIADEC is laying the groundwork to ensure that operations are ready to proceed once the lease is ratified. This expansion is expected to position Ghana as a key player in the global aluminum industry.
Dr. Mensah stressed that the organization is working hard to balance environmental responsibility with economic development, benefiting both the economy and local communities.
The approval of the lease by Parliament is seen as a crucial step in Ghana’s long-term vision for the aluminum industry.
