The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has issued a strong call to action against illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, urging its members and the broader business community to actively participate in the fight against the menace.
In a press release, PRINPAG condemned the environmental degradation caused by galamsey, emphasizing its detrimental impact not only on natural resources but also on businesses and the overall economic landscape of Ghana.
One of the major concerns of these activities is the extensive water contamination caused by galamsey operations, which are polluting rivers and streams with toxic chemicals such as mercury and cyanide. These chemicals, used in the illegal extraction of gold, pose serious risks to businesses that rely on clean water for their operations, particularly in agriculture, manufacturing, and food and beverage production.

The increased costs of purifying water to meet safety standards are weighing heavily on these industries, making it more expensive to maintain operations and threatening their profitability.
It’s worth noting that the long-term damage to water bodies also affects agricultural productivity, which could lead to increased food insecurity and higher prices for consumers. The agricultural sector, which provides livelihoods for millions of Ghanaians, is particularly vulnerable to the destruction of water resources, with galamsey creating a ripple effect that impacts the country’s economic stability.
Beyond environmental damage, galamsey is creating severe public health risks that are affecting workforce productivity across multiple sectors. Communities exposed to contaminated water face a range of health problems, including skin diseases, respiratory issues, and long-term chronic conditions, which in turn reduce labor productivity and increase healthcare costs for businesses.
A weakened labor force due to poor health undermines overall business efficiency and growth, particularly in industries that are labor-intensive.
PRINPAG’s call for urgent action underscores the need for businesses to advocate for stricter environmental regulations, as the health of the workforce is integral to economic success. Supporting initiatives to eliminate galamsey can help ensure a healthier, more productive workforce and mitigate the negative financial impacts of illegal mining on the national economy.
The economic losses incurred by legal mining businesses due to galamsey are substantial, and the business community must recognize the broader economic risks posed by these illegal operations.
Joining forces to address this challenge, PRINPAG is calling on its members to expose individuals and groups involved in galamsey activities. The association urged its members to run “naming and shaming” campaigns, publishing the names and pictures of those engaged in illegal mining to hold them accountable.

The association also called on state institutions and Parliament to act decisively, urging lawmakers to demonstrate leadership and prioritize environmental sustainability over short-term political interests. PRINPAG reaffirmed its commitment to the national effort to combat galamsey, urging all stakeholders to join the fight against illegal mining. “The fight is a collective one, and PRINPAG pledges the readiness
