Ghana’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Kojo Bonsu, has formally presented his credentials to Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister and Director of Protocol Hong Lei, signaling a renewed commitment to strengthening diplomatic, cultural, and economic ties between the two nations.
Since assuming office in June 2025, Ambassador Bonsu has actively engaged in initiatives aimed at deepening bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, and education.
A few days ago, Ambassador Bonsu visited the University for Development Studies (UDS) football team in Dalian, China, to congratulate the team on winning the World University Football Games. During the visit, he also held discussions with officials from Dalian City to explore potential collaborations across education, sports, cultural exchanges, and business partnerships. These engagements reflect the ambassador’s strategy of leveraging people-to-people diplomacy to complement economic and trade objectives.
The diplomatic efforts come at a time when Ghana–China trade has reached record levels. Bilateral trade reached US$11.8 billion in 2024, up 7.1% from the previous year. China exports a wide range of goods to Ghana, including machinery, electronics, textiles, vehicles, and construction materials, which support Ghana’s growing infrastructure and industrial development. On the other hand, Ghana exports cocoa, timber, shea butter, cashew nuts, and other agricultural commodities to China, helping diversify its trade portfolio and reduce reliance on gold exports.
Trade growth between the two countries has been robust. Between mid-2024 and mid-2025, China’s exports to Ghana rose 63.1%, while Ghana’s exports to China grew 50.7%. Recent trade agreements, including the granting of zero tariffs on selected Ghanaian exports, are expected to further enhance trade flows and create new opportunities for Ghanaian businesses in the Chinese market. These developments highlight the growing economic interdependence between the two nations.
Ambassador Bonsu has emphasized that his diplomatic role goes beyond ceremonial duties. He has expressed his commitment to serving with humility and passion, aiming to build bridges for economic, cultural, and developmental cooperation.
