The Energy Ministry is establishing a command-and-control centre to improve monitoring and oversight of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Energy Minister Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor has announced.
He made the announcement during a meeting with regional and district managers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region.
The system is expected to use modern technology to track ECG operations in real time, including monitoring transformers, service delivery, and response times to outages across the country.
Dr. Jinapor explained that the initiative is aimed at strengthening accountability and improving the reliability of power distribution. He noted that delays in response and operational inefficiencies within ECG have contributed to public dissatisfaction with electricity supply.
As part of the reform, ECG managers will be issued dedicated mobile phones linked to the monitoring system to ensure faster communication and reporting of faults. The ministry also plans to introduce a short code that will allow citizens to directly report power disruptions to the authorities.
In addition, the Energy Ministry intends to provide logistics support, including electric motorcycles and pickup trucks, to improve field operations and response efficiency at the district level.
According to the Minister, the reforms form part of a broader effort to modernise the power distribution system and enhance service delivery. He stressed that the new system is designed not only to provide updates but also to actively track and improve response times across the network.
The Energy Ministry says the initiative will help improve discipline, transparency, and accountability within ECG while supporting efforts to stabilise electricity supply nationwide.
