The election of several prominent figures from Ghana’s creative industry to Parliament in the 2024 elections is expected to significantly boost the industry’s growth. These new lawmakers, who have experience in acting, media, and entrepreneurship, are poised to bring fresh perspectives and advocacy for the creative sector, which is often underrepresented in legislative discussions.

John Dumelo, a popular actor and businessman, was elected to represent Ayawaso West Wuogon. He is joined by Kwame Asare Obeng, also known as Kwame A Plus, who won the Gomoa Central seat as an independent candidate. Baba Sadiq Abdulai, an entrepreneur with a background in media, secured the Okaikwei Central seat, while actress Ebi Bright claimed victory in the Tema Central constituency. Veteran actress Dzifa Gomashie was re-elected in Ketu South, and media entrepreneur Ohene Kwame Frimpong won the Asante Akyem North seat.

The presence of these creative industry players in Parliament is expected to lead to stronger advocacy for policies that support the arts, culture, and entertainment sectors.

These areas hold immense potential for economic growth and job creation, particularly as global demand for creative services and goods continues to rise. Between 2017 and 2022, creative services exports surged by 29%, reaching $1.4 trillion, and creative goods exports increased by 19% to $713 billion. This trend highlights the global growth potential of the creative economy, which Ghana’s new legislators could help tap into.

With a focus on securing more funding for creative projects, improving arts education, and promoting Ghanaian culture internationally, these elected figures are expected to foster stronger collaborations between government and private stakeholders.

Their advocacy could help elevate the creative industry as a key driver of economic development in Ghana. This shift marks a new era for the creative sector, with greater opportunities for innovation, talent development, and international recognition.
