Kenya’s long-distance runner, Emmanuel Wanyonyi secured gold in the men’s 800m at the Paris 2024 Olympics, clocking an impressive 1:41.19 at Stade de France. This time marks the third-fastest in history, just 0.2 seconds shy of David Rudisha’s 2012 world record of 1:40.91.
Wanyonyi’s win marks the fifth consecutive Olympic victory for Kenya in the men’s 800m.
Wanyonyi faced fierce competition, with Canada’s Marco Arop claiming silver in 1:41.20, setting a new continental record, while Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati took bronze with a time of 1:41.50.
Reflecting on the challenging race, Wanyonyi said, “It wasn’t easy for me,” acknowledging the intense pressure from his rivals. Despite the high-stakes competition, Wanyonyi led from the start and maintained his lead to victory.
Arop, the silver medalist, noted, “It’s a bit bittersweet because I wanted that gold medal so badly.” He praised the race’s intensity and the strong field of competitors.
