To drive and sustain the country’s digitization agenda, the Presidential Candidate of the new governing NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is promising to increase internet penetration across the country to over 90% should he be elected president.
The current Vice President of the country made this announcement on Sunday, August 18th at the launch of his party’s manifesto for the 2024 General Elections.
This vision, Dr. Bawumia explains is part of his broader agenda to bridge the digital divide in the country.
Touting the government’s achievement in the digitization agenda, Dr. Bawumia mentioned that the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration after inheriting an internet penetration rate of 34% in 2016, increased it to 70% as of 2023.

With this achievement, the flagbearer indicates that Ghana stands the chance of benefiting from an internet penetration of over 90% in the next four years if he is elected president in the December 7th presidential polls.
“It is my goal to eliminate the digital divide by achieving over 90% internet penetration within the next four years. We have already made very significant progress in this direction by increasing internet penetration from 34% in 2016 to some 70% by 2023. The entire task in the next four years is to move from 70% to over 90% as exists in the advanced countries,” the vice president announced to a cheering crowd in Sekondi-Takoradi.
Amidst the much-touted internet penetration, Ghanaians have been agitating about the cost of internet data as Telecel Ghana few days ago adjusted their internet data charges. There have been online campaigns as well as other initiatives to ensure the prices of internet data are reduced.
With this huge internet penetration drive, some Ghanaians anticipate that this agenda will be accompanied by a reduction in the cost of data in the country.
