Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has deployed new state-of-the-art security screening equipment at the passenger screening checkpoints in Terminals 2 and 3 of Kotoka International Airport, introducing technology that enhances aviation security while significantly improving the passenger screening experience.
The deployment marks a major upgrade to the airport’s security infrastructure and brings Kotoka International Airport in line with modern international screening practices that enable faster and more efficient passenger processing.
According to GACL, passengers are no longer required to remove laptops and other large electronic devices from their cabin baggage during security screening. In most cases, travellers can also keep their shoes and belts on unless additional screening is required based on security profiling.
The new technology also allows passengers to keep Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGs) inside their cabin baggage during screening, removing another step that has traditionally delayed passengers at security checkpoints.
However, GACL emphasised that existing restrictions on liquids remain in force.
“Security regulations still prohibit Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGs) that exceed 100ml in volume per container,” the company said in a public notice.
To further improve efficiency, the airport has installed an Automatic Tray Return System that automatically returns trays to passengers after screening, reducing waiting times and helping speed up passenger flow through security checkpoints.
The company said the upgraded screening system is designed to strengthen aviation security while making the travel experience more convenient for passengers.
“This upgrade is designed to enhance aviation security screening while improving the passenger experience,” GACL stated.
Although the equipment has now been deployed, GACL noted that operations will transition progressively, with the new system functioning alongside existing procedures during the implementation phase to ensure a smooth migration.
GACL has appealed to passengers and airport stakeholders to cooperate during the transition as operations continue under the upgraded screening regime.
The deployment represents another step in GACL’s efforts to modernise airport infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and maintain international aviation security standards while enhancing the overall travel experience at Kotoka International Airport, Ghana’s principal international gateway.
