Although Electric Vehicles (EVs) are marketed as a mark of efficiency, the silent, swift, and sustainable future of commuting, it is emerging that the technology is becoming a key factor affecting productivity and efficiency at Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL).
Both senior and junior staff of the Metro Mass say they are concerned about the striking irony that the very technology meant to propel the company into a new era of productivity is instead tethering its fleet to the sidelines for hours on end.
During a joint resolution meeting held at the Presbyterian Church Hall in Bantama, both the Senior and Junior Staff Unions raised a red flag over “charging crisis” that has turned the innovation into stagnation at the state-owned transport company.

The Efficiency Paradox
According to the concerned workers, previously, Metro Mass’s charging arrangements allowed electric buses to be powered up and ready for service in approximately 45 minutes.
However, under the current system, that window has ballooned to a staggering four hours. This means that instead of a quick turnaround, buses are now sitting idle for nearly half a work shift just to get a full charge.
The High Street Journal’s analysis points out the irony that the technological “upgrade” has resulted in a 433% increase in downtime. This, the workers say, is directly reducing the availability of buses for active service and crippling operational efficiency.
For a transit company, every minute a bus spends off the road is a minute of lost revenue and a blow to public reliability. This is compounding the already challenged Metro Mass Limited.
Idle Buses, Frustrated Workers
The impact of this 4-hour stall ripples through the entire organization. When buses are stuck at a charging station rather than on their routes, the company’s ability to meet passenger demand collapses.
For a company already grappling with the deteriorating condition of its terminals and a need for better revenue generation, having its most advanced assets immobilized is an operational nightmare.
The workers aren’t just frustrated; they are demanding answers. The irony of a better technology leading to a slowdown in operations has sparked a call for immediate accountability.

The Union’s Demands: A Search for Answers
Refusing to let the company’s productivity be drained by a slow plug, the Unions have officially submitted a resolution to Management, demanding three key actions to rectify the EV charging challenge.
The workers are demanding an Immediate Technical Review. They are calling for a deep dive into the current charging arrangements to find out why the system has regressed so drastically.
In addition, it is also calling for a formal probe into the matter. It demands an investigation into the specific decisions and procurement processes that led to the adoption of such an inefficient system.
It is also calling for the establishment of an internal committee, including union representation, to investigate the matter and recommend corrective measures.

The Bottomline
As Metro Mass Transit looks toward the future, the staff is reminding leadership that true productivity isn’t found in a shiny new gadget, but in a system that keeps the wheels turning.
Until the charging crisis is resolved, MMTL’s modernization will remain a mirage.
