Ghana’s basic education system is soon expected to undergo one of its most significant transformations in decades, with pupils expected to begin learning Artificial Intelligence (AI), Coding, Electronics, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and Ethics under a revised national curriculum.
Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu announced that the curriculum review is almost complete and is expected to be submitted to the Ministry of Education by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA).
The reforms, he said, are intended to give Ghanaian children a “smart start” by equipping them with practical and future-ready skills from an early age.

For years, Ghana’s education system has faced persistent criticism for placing too much emphasis on memorisation and examination performance while paying insufficient attention to practical skills, creativity and problem-solving.
Many graduates have often been described as academically qualified but lacking the technical and digital competencies increasingly demanded by today’s labour market.
The planned curriculum overhaul appears aimed at changing that narrative. Rather than waiting until senior high school or tertiary education, children would begin developing digital literacy, coding skills and hands-on technical knowledge at the foundational level.
The inclusion of Artificial Intelligence reflects the growing reality that emerging technologies are rapidly reshaping industries, jobs and everyday life.
Introducing coding and electronics at an early age could also help nurture computational thinking, innovation and problem-solving abilities, while expanding TVET seeks to expose pupils to practical skills that can translate into future careers and entrepreneurship.

The addition of ethics is equally significant, signalling an effort to ensure that technological advancement is accompanied by responsible citizenship, integrity and sound decision-making.
This curriculum reform, if implemented effectively, could better align Ghana’s education system with the demands of a rapidly evolving global economy, where digital skills increasingly determine competitiveness and employability.
The reforms could also encourage a generation of innovators capable of creating solutions to local challenges rather than simply consuming imported technologies.

While the success of the initiative will depend largely on teacher training, learning resources, digital infrastructure and sustained investment, the proposed curriculum marks a shift from an education system centred largely on theory towards one that seeks to combine knowledge with practical skills.
