In an interesting development, President John Dramani Mahama has dissolved the Boards of nine state-owned enterprises and institutions with immediate effect.
This shake-up, announced through a statement signed by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, affects key entities across the country’s energy, finance, infrastructure, petroleum and sports sectors.
The affected institutions are;
Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited
Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST)
Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO)
Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited (CBG)
Ghana Post Company Limited,
Road Maintenance Trust Fund,
TDC Ghana Limited
Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), and
National Sports Authority.
The announcement, issued on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, did not provide any explanation or specific reasons for the President’s decision to dissolve the Boards but simply confirmed that the dissolution takes immediate effect.
Following the dissolution, the relevant sector Ministers have been directed to take “all necessary steps” to give effect to the President’s decision. According to the statement, the necessary steps must be undertaken in accordance with applicable laws and governing instruments of the affected institutions.
This means the immediate task for the respective sector Ministers is to operationalise the Board dissolutions while ensuring that the transition complies with the legal and institutional frameworks governing the nine entities.
The Presidency indicated that the Boards will be reconstituted in due course, suggesting that the current move is an immediate restructuring of the governing bodies rather than the termination of Board oversight altogether. The timing and composition of the replacement Boards, however, have not been disclosed.
For now, the affected institutions are expected to operate within the transition arrangements that will follow the dissolution, with the relevant Ministers responsible for taking the necessary steps under the applicable laws and governing instruments.
