Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi and former Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah is signalling a seeming difference in policy directions between President Mahama and his Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.
The MP says there appears to be lack of coherence in the new government’s fiscal policy direction and strategy.
While the head of the government, President John Mahama is trumpeting fiscal consolidation, Oppong Nkrumah says the Finance Minister is rather propagating an expansionary fiscal policy.
Mr. Mahama has made it clear to prioritize fiscal consolidation which entails contractionary measures. The President has committed to cutting spending, reducing deficits, and minimizing wastage to ensure economic stability.
However, the finance minister continues to emphasize the creation of jobs which tilts towards the opposite of the President’s vision. Dr. Ato Forson’s vision suggests a focus on fiscal expansion which will require more spending. Job creation demands heavy investment in productive sectors and infrastructure directly contrasting the consolidation agenda of President Mahama.
This divergence in policy directions, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah says raises concerns about whether the government has a clear and unified strategy to navigate Ghana’s post-2024 economic recovery.
“Already, members of the new administration appear to be at cross purposes on key responsibilities. The Finance Minister is promising to create jobs begging the question, what the real economic sector ministers will be doing. Fiscal expansionism is being signaled while the President’s statement calls for fiscal consolidation,” the former minister under the erstwhile NPP administration observed in a Facebook post.
Despite the divergence in policy direction, Oppong Nkrumah says he is hopeful that the announced National Economic Dialogue will provide a clear path and feasible economic direction for the government.
“Hopefully this dialogue should generate ideas that are feasible in fast tracking the recovery that started in 2024,” he indicated.
As the government moves forward, economic analysts suggest that a well-coordinated policy approach balancing job creation with sustainable fiscal management will be crucial in fast-tracking Ghana’s recovery.
