The National Service Authority (NSA) is set to launch a new training initiative that will see all National Service Personnel (NSPs) undergo basic military drills beginning August 3, 2025. The programme, officially named the National Service Emergency Response Readiness Programme (NSERRP), is being developed in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces.
The initiative aims to instill discipline, national pride, and physical resilience in graduates completing their mandatory national service. Personnel will receive up to two months of composite military training under the supervision of the Ghana Armed Forces, following a formal agreement now under discussion between the NSA and the Military High Command.
“The introduction of this military training is a step in the right direction and must be embraced by all and sundry as one of the indicators for resetting the country, particularly the youth,” said Felix Gyamfi, Director-General of the NSA, during a high-level meeting held on April 23, 2025.
Gyamfi stressed that the training will form a core part of the national service experience moving forward.
“All national service personnel will undergo basic military drills and orientation as part of their service experience,” he stated.
Representing the Military High Command, Brigadier General Amoah-Boakye affirmed the Armed Forces’ full backing for the initiative. He assured the Authority of their preparedness to implement the programme once formally launched.
The NSERRP reflects a key priority of President John Dramani Mahama, who first announced the initiative during his February 27, 2025, State of the Nation Address. It forms part of a broader agenda to foster national development through youth transformation and strategic civic engagement.
With over 100,000 graduates deployed annually through the National Service Scheme, the programme is expected to have a wide-reaching impact on the next generation of Ghanaian professionals.
