In a significant setback for Ghana’s footballing aspirations, the Black Galaxies have been eliminated from the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after a 3-1 defeat to Nigeria’s Super Eagles B team. This result not only marks a sporting disappointment but also brings considerable economic implications for both nations.
Following a goalless draw in the first leg in Accra, Ghana failed to make an impact during the return leg at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. Nigeria’s victory was spearheaded by goals from Sadiq Ismail, Junior Nduka, and Isaac Saviour. Although Stephen Amankuna scored late for Ghana, it was not enough to turn the tide or change the overall outcome of the game, sealing Black Galaxies’ elimination.
For Nigeria, the qualification is a significant achievement, promising benefits that go beyond football. The CHAN tournament offers increased visibility, sponsorship opportunities, and the chance for the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to attract international partnerships. Additionally, hosting rights for CHAN fixtures could boost Nigeria’s tourism and hospitality sectors, drawing in revenue from visiting fans, media outlets, and corporate sponsors.

Conversely, Ghana’s failure to qualify for the fourth time at CHAN represents a missed opportunity both on and off the field. Without participation, Ghana loses exposure for its local talents, reducing the chances for players from the Black Galaxies to be scouted by European clubs. The absence also impacts sponsorships, potential investments, and football development initiatives linked to international tournaments, delivering a blow to the nation’s football ecosystem, which is already facing significant challenges.
Nigeria’s advancement to the tournament, which will take place in Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya, highlights the broader economic benefits of CHAN participation. These include increased global recognition, opportunities for talent development, and potential financial growth. Ghana now faces the daunting task of rebuilding and preparing the Black Galaxies for future competitions to reassert its presence and achieve success on the continental stage.
