The government has announced the inclusion of four critical mental health disorders; depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder, and schizophrenia into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) benefits package, as part of efforts to enhance mental health care in the country.
This significant expansion, which takes effect on November 1, 2024, aims to strengthen access to essential mental health services for all Ghanaians.
The integration of these mental health conditions into the NHIS allows subscribers to access outpatient services and initial hospitalization at any NHIS-accredited facility.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye, emphasized that this initiative is designed to eliminate financial and geographical barriers that have historically prevented individuals from seeking necessary mental health treatment.
“By integrating mental health care into the NHIS, we hope to provide a lifeline for individuals suffering from these conditions,” he stated.
This expansion is part of a broader national strategy aimed at achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Ghana.
The NHIA aims to mainstream mental health services within the general healthcare system, which has been crucial in addressing the significant gaps in mental healthcare access across the country.
Currently, Ghana has limited specialized mental health facilities, including the Accra Psychiatric Hospital and Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital, which continue to offer free services.
The NHIA also acknowledged the stigma surrounding mental illness as a major barrier preventing many from seeking help. It was acknowledged that, by incorporating mental health services into the NHIS framework, the government hopes to combat this stigma and encourage individuals to seek treatment without fear of judgment or financial burden.
The authority noted that many people with mild to moderate psychological disorders often avoid care due to these concerns.
In addition to expanding mental health coverage, the NHIS has recently introduced several other enhancements aimed at improving healthcare access.
These include family planning services, coverage for childhood cancers, and provisions for dialysis.
The NHIA said it remains dedicated to continually improving the scheme to meet the evolving healthcare needs of the population.
