The Tour Operators Union of Ghana (TOUGHA) has welcomed the launch of Ghana’s new electronic visa platform, describing the initiative as a major policy intervention aimed at improving the country’s tourism competitiveness and easing access for international travellers.
In a statement issued following the launch of the e-visa regime by the government under President John Dramani Mahama, TOUGHA said the digital visa system would help position Ghana as “one of Africa’s most accessible” travel destinations while improving the overall visitor experience for tourists, business travellers, conference delegates and members of the African diaspora.
The union noted that cumbersome visa procedures have often served as a barrier to travel decisions and said the fully digital application process would help simplify travel planning, reduce waiting periods and enhance efficiency within the country’s entry procedures.
TOUGHA also commended the government’s decision to waive visa fees for African passport holders, describing the move as a “bold Pan-African” policy that aligns with broader objectives of African integration, intra-African trade and cultural exchange.
According to the union, the policy further reinforces Ghana’s reputation as a leading advocate of Pan-Africanism and could strengthen the country’s appeal as a preferred gateway destination on the continent.
The association further praised the government’s engagement with the private sector during consultations leading to the implementation of the platform, highlighting the importance of “public-private partnership” in shaping tourism and investment policies.
The union said the launch of the platform is expected to contribute to higher visitor arrivals, improve destination confidence and enhance Ghana’s competitiveness within the global travel market.
