The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) has recovered GH¢1.6 million from defaulting customers in the Sunyani Area on the first day of its ongoing two-week revenue mobilization and loss control exercise.
The initiative, which began this week, forms part of NEDCo’s intensified efforts to collect over GH¢20 million owed by customers in the Sunyani zone.
The area’s total outstanding debt currently stands at approximately GH¢318 million, according to Mr Eugene Odoi Addo, Sunyani Area Manager.
Speaking to the media, Mr Addo disclosed that the debts span a wide range of customer categories, including government institutions, non-governmental organisations, and postpaid electricity users.
“We’ve already recovered GH¢1.6 million in just the first day. Many of the clients have entered structured payment agreements with us, allowing for a smooth collection process,” Mr Addo explained.
He said the exercise aims not only to retrieve outstanding revenue but also to instill a culture of timely payment among customers.
“Our operations must remain financially sustainable. We rely on these payments to meet obligations to our power suppliers and continue providing quality service,” he noted.
Mr Addo also highlighted customer reluctance to pay bills as a recurring challenge, prompting the need for periodic revenue collection campaigns.
He urged customers to take advantage of the exercise to clear their arrears and avoid potential disconnections or penalties.
On the issue of prepaid metering, he acknowledged the challenges associated with converting postpaid customers to the prepaid system.
However, he revealed that NEDCo is rolling out strategies to accelerate prepaid meter installations, especially in regional and district capitals.
“We’re prioritizing the expansion of prepaid metering to ensure greater control, transparency, and efficiency in electricity usage and billing,” Mr Addo said.
The revenue mobilization drive is expected to cover all customer segments within the Sunyani operational area, which spans multiple districts in the Bono Region.
NEDCo has assured customers of its readiness to provide flexible payment plans where needed and continues to encourage collaboration to sustain electricity distribution and avoid disruptions.
