As the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) commemorates its golden jubilee, Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, has issued a compelling call for member states to rededicate themselves to the bloc’s foundational vision of regional integration, economic resilience, and shared prosperity.
Speaking at the special ECOWAS Council of Ministers meeting held at the Accra International Conference Centre, the Minister emphasized the urgency of revitalizing collective efforts to address the region’s evolving economic challenges. His remarks set the tone for the opening ceremony of a two-day event marking the launch of year-long celebrations for ECOWAS’ 50th anniversary.

“As we commemorate five decades of ECOWAS, this milestone presents an opportunity not merely to reflect on the past, but to recalibrate our commitment to the future. Ghana remains unwavering in its dedication to the principles of regional cohesion, sustainable development, and lasting peace.” Ampem said.
Founded in 1975 with the goal of fostering economic integration among its fifteen member countries, ECOWAS has been a pillar of regional cooperation and policy harmonization. The bloc has played a pivotal role in areas ranging from conflict resolution and democratic governance to infrastructure development and trade liberalization.
However, recent years have seen the region grapple with mounting economic pressures, ranging from inflationary shocks and currency instability to youth unemployment and infrastructure deficits.
The minister acknowledged the accomplishments of ECOWAS, praising the institution for its resilience and ability to navigate complex political and economic landscapes. Yet, he was clear in asserting that the future of the bloc hinges on reinvigorated cooperation among member states, coupled with actionable strategies to fulfill the aspirations of the region’s growing population.

“Let this anniversary be a springboard for innovation, inclusivity, and strategic collaboration. We must move beyond rhetoric to implement policies that truly transform the lives of our citizens,” he urged.
The commemorative meeting brings together finance ministers, policymakers, and stakeholders from across the sub-region to engage in high-level discussions focused on regional economic recovery, trade enhancement, and institutional reforms. These deliberations aim to chart a clear course for ECOWAS as it embarks on its next chapter.
