MTN Ghana’s Mobile Money (MoMo) platform experienced disruptions on Thursday, leaving several customers unable to complete transfers, withdrawals, and merchant payments. The disruption is crippling transactions across the country and exposing the vulnerability of Ghana’s heavy reliance on mobile money.
Consumers who move about without cash are finding themselves stranded at fuel stations, supermarkets, and transport hubs. Payment failures are causing frustration and, in many cases, embarrassment as customers attempt to settle bills or make basic purchases without success.
Small businesses and traders are also bearing the brunt. Many depend almost entirely on MoMo for daily sales, and with the system down, transactions stall and revenue slips away. Service providers who rely on instant digital payments to meet cash flow needs are equally affected.
The outage shows how integral MoMo has become to commerce in Ghana. With the platform serving as the dominant payment channel, any disruption sends ripple effects through retail, trade, and household spending. The longer the downtime lasts, the greater the risk of lost income for businesses and inconvenience for consumers.
MTN has not yet confirmed the nature of the technical issue or when services will be fully restored, raising concerns over the reliability of digital payment infrastructure. The outage highlights the urgency of stronger backup systems and safeguards to ensure continuity in financial services as Ghana moves deeper into a cash-lite economy.
