MTN Group Chief Executive Officer Ralph Mupita met with International Monetary Fund (IMF) First Deputy Managing Director Dan Katz in South Africa to discuss economic conditions in key African markets and the role of digital infrastructure in supporting sustainable growth.
The meeting, held during Katz’s visit to South Africa, focused on the macroeconomic outlook for Ghana, South Africa and Nigeria, three of MTN’s major markets, as well as the potential for digitalisation to support economic development across the continent.
“Given MTN’s pan-African presence and position, as well as our role in advancing digital and financial inclusion, the discussion centred on the macroeconomic outlook across our key markets of South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana,” said Mupita. “In particular, we discussed the power of the digital economy to drive sustainable growth across the continent.”
The discussions support African economies seeking to expand digital access while navigating economic challenges, including fiscal pressures, currency volatility and uneven growth. MTN’s presence across multiple markets gives the company exposure to differing economic conditions while also positioning it as a major participant in the continent’s digital and financial inclusion efforts.
According to MTN, the engagement aligns with its Ambition 2030 strategy, which seeks to accelerate the company’s impact by providing digital platforms to consumers, households and businesses across Africa.
The company said its purpose of “leading digital solutions for Africa” underpins efforts to expand digital connectivity and inclusion.
“By working with partners from across the globe, we can speed up Africa’s digital transformation. We appreciate the opportunity to engage constructively with the IMF leadership, and look forward to more engagements ahead,” Mupita concluded.
Katz was accompanied by his Advisor Matthew Jones, IMF Mission Chief for South Africa Delia Velculescu and IMF Senior Resident Representative and Head of the South Africa Office Tidiane Kinda.
Mupita was joined by MTN Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer Nompilo Morafo, Treasury Executive Thuto Shomang and Chief of Staff Jerry Varachia.
