Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has inaugurated the new Governing Board of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), calling on members to rebuild public trust and ensure greater accountability in Ghana’s capital markets.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Accra, Dr. Forson said the board’s formation comes at a critical time as Ghana works to recover from sustained macroeconomic stress.
“Our people are worried. The taxpayer cannot be used as a punching bag, and the public must no longer bear the burden of regulatory failures in the financial sector,” he said.
Dr. Forson urged the newly appointed board to prioritize integrity and focus on their oversight role, stressing the need to protect investors, promote transparency, and maintain the stability of the capital market.
He underscored the SEC’s importance in restoring confidence and credibility in Ghana’s financial system, which has faced scrutiny in the wake of financial sector cleanup efforts and continued market volatility.
The new board is chaired by Dr. Adu Anane Antwi, a former Director-General of the Commission, who vowed that they will work together to maintain the highest standards of market regulation and investor protection. An expression of appreciation for the opportunity to serve again.
The SEC plays a key regulatory role in Ghana’s financial sector, with responsibilities that include licensing market operators, enforcing disclosure standards, and overseeing trading activities.
