Workers at Metro Mass Transit Limited have begun a red-band protest over delayed salary payments, with their unions demanding that management settle all October 2026 salaries by Thursday, November 5, or face possible industrial action.
The Senior and Junior Staff Divisional Unions directed employees to wear red bands during working hours from Wednesday, November 4, as an initial demonstration of their dissatisfaction with what they described as persistent delays in salary payments.
In a final notice dated November 3 and addressed to the General Secretary of the General Transport, Petroleum and Chemical Workers’ Union of Ghana, the unions said management had failed to respond to earlier complaints submitted on September 14.
The unions said they subsequently wrote to the national secretariat on September 29 seeking intervention, but the salary issue remained unresolved.
They are demanding full payment of October salaries to all staff by close of business on November 5. They warned that partial payments or payments made selectively to certain employees would not constitute compliance.
The unions said failure to meet the deadline would leave them with no alternative but to pursue further lawful industrial relations measures to protect workers’ interests.
Despite the protest, employees have been instructed to report for work as scheduled and continue performing their normal duties. The unions also directed members not to speak to the media on their behalf without authorisation from their divisional executives.
The directives further require workers to report any intimidation or victimisation linked to wearing the red bands to union executives. Members have also been cautioned against taking independent industrial action outside the instructions of union leadership.
If management fails to pay the salaries by the deadline, the joint union executives will meet to assess the situation and determine the next course of action.
