The Jamestown Fishing Harbour project, which began in December 2018, has been completed and is set for commissioning by President Akufo-Addo on September 13, 2024, a statement from the presidency said.
The project is a significant development for the local fishing community in Accra, promising to improve livelihoods and boost the fishing industry.

Funded through a grant from the Chinese government, the harbour is part of a broader infrastructure collaboration between Ghana and China. It features several modern facilities designed to support sustainable fishing and enhance productivity. One of the key additions is cold storage units, which will allow fishermen to preserve their catch, reducing post-harvest losses and extending market reach. This is especially important in Ghana, where inadequate storage has been a persistent issue.
The harbour also includes processing facilities, enabling fishermen to add value to their products locally. This development is expected to boost income by allowing fish to be processed and sold at higher prices, while also creating jobs for the local community.

Another key feature is a net mending bay, providing fishermen with a designated space to repair their equipment quickly and efficiently, reducing downtime. The harbour also houses administrative offices, offering centralized services such as licensing and registration, and streamlining processes for the local fishing industry.
The completion of the Jamestown Fishing Harbour reflects the government’s commitment to revitalizing the fishing sector and supporting sustainable practices. This project aligns with global efforts, particularly the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 14, which focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources.
The James Town project however costs just about half of the cost of the Elmina Fishing Harbour although it has more amenities, sparking calls for a value for money audit for the Elmina project.
