Morocco is set to revolutionize its telecommunications sector with the imminent launch of fifth-generation (5G) internet services. The announcement, made by Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, Minister Delegate for Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, aligns with the nation’s preparations to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The Morocco 5G Rollout aims to enhance connectivity significantly.
Speaking at a recent parliamentary session, Seghrouchni outlined Morocco’s phased approach to 5G deployment. By 2026, 25% of the population will have access to 5G services, with a target of reaching 70% by 2030. Priority will be given to cities hosting World Cup matches, ensuring comprehensive high-speed connectivity for residents and international visitors alike.
This Morocco 5G Rollout is part of Morocco’s broader strategy to enhance its digital infrastructure. The government plans to connect 6,300 public administrative sites to fiber-optic internet by 2026. By 2030, this initiative is expected to extend high-quality internet access to 5.6 million households, significantly boosting the country’s digital inclusivity.
Morocco’s government has demonstrated its commitment to digital transformation, investing over MAD 8.4 billion (approximately USD 834.8 million) in telecommunications projects in 2023 alone. These investments include support for local telecom providers to accelerate technological progress and meet the growing demand for connectivity.
Morocco’s tech-forward approach has also attracted the attention of global technology firms. Ericsson recently hosted Technology Days in Rabat and Casablanca, showcasing the potential of 5G technology and its alignment with the country’s Digital Morocco 2030 strategy. Similarly, U.S.-based Oracle announced plans earlier this year to establish two cloud regions in Morocco, aimed at supporting the nation’s digital economy.
The rollout of 5G, combined with ongoing investments in fiber-optic infrastructure, is expected to spur economic growth, enhance public services, and provide a seamless experience for global visitors during AFCON 2025 and the FIFA World Cup in 2030.
