ICT-related stocks drove trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) last week, accounting for 93.76% of the total value traded as activity across the equities market increased sharply.
The sector recorded GH¢136.72 million in traded value between September 22 and 25, out of the GH¢145.82 million traded across the entire market. ICT stocks also accounted for 21.75 million units, representing 85.20% of the 25.53 million units traded during the week.
The activity was concentrated around ICT-related counters, including MTNGH, CLYD and DIGICUT, making the sector the main driver of transactions on the exchange during the period.
The scale of the concentration is significant. For every GH¢1 traded on the equities market during the week, about 94 pesewas came from ICT stocks, underscoring the sector’s influence on overall market activity.
Trading picks up sharply
The dominance of ICT stocks came against a broader increase in trading activity on the GSE.
Total volume traded rose 59.52%, from 16.00 million units in the previous week to 25.53 million units, while the value of transactions increased 56.37%, from GH¢93.26 million to GH¢145.82 million.
However, the surge in activity did not translate into a stronger overall market.
The GSE Composite Index fell 2.95% to 13,886.74, while total market capitalisation declined 1.45% to GH¢266.27 billion.
The contrasting movements show that the week’s higher trading activity was not necessarily driven by broad-based price increases. While investors traded significantly more shares, prices across parts of the market came under pressure.
