Ghana’s stock market so far has posted modest gains in early April but remained below the record highs seen during March’s rally, reflecting a period of consolidation after strong equity performance.
The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) closed at 13,126.11 points on April 8, up 44.92 points from the previous day, while market capitalization increased to GH¢244.95 billion, according to Ghana Stock Exchange data.
Trading activity rose following the Easter Monday holiday, with 2.53 million shares valued at GH¢19.07 million exchanging hands on April 8, compared with 2.22 million shares worth GH¢10.18 million on April 7. The increase in traded value, despite a modest rise in volume, indicates activity in higher-priced stocks and blue-chip equities.
Despite the slight gains, the GSE remains below the March 2026 highs, when the Composite Index broke past 15,000 points and market capitalization exceeded GH¢300 billion. March’s rally saw strong performance across several blue-chip stocks, including GOIL, GCB and MTN Ghana, driving one of the most significant quarterly surges in the exchange’s recent history.
The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) moved slightly lower to 7,912.63 points, down 18.85 points from April 7, showing a mild pullback in financial sector equities even as the broader market stabilized. Year-to-date returns remain robust, with the Composite Index up 49.67 percent and the Financial Stocks Index rising over 70 percent since January 1, 2026.
Early April trading reflects market consolidation and measured growth following March’s exceptional rally. While momentum has slowed, the market’s modest gains and rising trading value suggest continued investor engagement as equities navigate a period of stabilization.
