The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Mr. Eric Opoku, has announced that the government will release $1 million to support more than 1,500 peasant farmers in Northern Ghana under the Feed Ghana Project to enhance local vegetable production.
The Minister said the funding is intended to empower grassroots farmers, particularly those already involved in tomato and vegetable cultivation but who lack financial means to expand their operations.
He said many of “these farmers are already on the ground, working hard but without the resources to scale up, that is why we are stepping in with this direct financial support,” he explained.
The disbursement will be formalised on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, after the Minister signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Apex Bank to facilitate the distribution.
The Minister said, “we’re working directly with registered peasant farmers, many of whom are already producing tomatoes. Some are being organised into cooperatives to help streamline the support.”
“On Wednesday, I’ll be signing an MoU with Apex Bank to release the $1 million to over 1,500 farmers. This is just the beginning,” he added.
The Minister also highlighted additional government support through the provision of improved seeds and farming inputs, all designed to support productivity and enable year-round cultivation.
“Our technical teams have developed high-quality seeds and inputs, and we’re making those available to farmers. I’ve been on the ground and I’m confident that with the knowledge and resources we have, Ghana can exceed what Burkina Faso is currently achieving in vegetable production,” Mr. Opoku noted further.
