Newmont has deepened its technology investment in Ghana’s mining sector by commissioning its first Cat® 6040 Next Generation Hydraulic Mining Shovel at the Ahafo South mine, positioning the operation among a small group of mines worldwide deploying the advanced equipment.
The commissioning is more than an equipment upgrade. It reflects the growing role of automation, productivity-enhancing technologies and safer heavy machinery as mining companies seek to improve efficiency while controlling operating costs and extending mine life.
Ahafo South becomes the first operation across Newmont’s global portfolio and one of only three mine sites worldwide to introduce the Cat® 6040 Next Generation Hydraulic Mining Shovel, supplied by Mantrac Ghana.
The equipment is expected to strengthen the mine’s primary loading operations through a larger bucket capacity, stronger digging force, higher engine performance and improved fuel efficiency.
According to Newmont, the shovel is powered by upgraded twin Cat® C32B engines and incorporates a reinforced undercarriage designed to improve durability and reduce maintenance requirements over its operating life.
Technology Drives Mining Productivity
The investment comes as mining companies globally face increasing pressure to produce more efficiently while meeting stricter environmental, operational and safety standards.
Heavy loading equipment plays a central role in mine productivity, influencing the speed at which ore is moved from the pit to processing facilities. Improvements in loading efficiency can translate into lower operating costs and improved production performance across the mining value chain.
Alex Kofi Annin, General Manager of Newmont Ahafo South, described the commissioning as a strategic investment in the mine’s future.
“The commissioning of the Cat® 6040 Next Generation shovel marks an important milestone for Ahafo South and reflects Newmont’s commitment to investing in innovative technologies that enhance safety, reliability and operational performance. As the first unit of its kind within Newmont, this investment strengthens our ability to deliver long-term value while supporting the continued growth and success of our operation.”
Safety Built into Operations
Beyond productivity gains, Newmont said the equipment has been designed to strengthen operational safety.
The hydraulic shovel complies with the company’s Heavy Mobile Equipment Safety Systems Standard and incorporates multiple safety enhancements, including dual fire suppression systems, improved operator visibility, camera monitoring technology, emergency escape systems, protected access platforms and multiple emergency shutdown controls.
The emphasis on technology-enabled safety comes at a time when mining companies are increasingly investing in equipment designed to reduce operational risks while improving workforce protection.
Signal of Continued Investment
The deployment also highlights Newmont’s continuing capital investment in Ghana, where the company remains one of the country’s largest gold producers.
The introduction of advanced mining equipment supports broader efforts to modernise operations while sustaining long-term production, strengthening operational resilience and creating value for shareholders, employees, contractors and host communities.
As mining companies accelerate digital transformation across exploration, extraction and processing, investments such as the Cat® 6040 Next Generation suggest that future competitiveness will increasingly depend on technology as much as mineral reserves.
