After seeming to calm Organised Labour with their enhanced approach to fighting the illegal mining menace, the government is faced with a new and fresh demand from the Media Coalition Against Galamsey.
The Media Coalition is not pleased with the concession of the government to just revoke the controversial Legislative Instrument which legalised mining in forest reserves. They are demanding that President Akufo-Addo also reverse all mining permits issued under the LI.
Convener of the Coalition, Dr. Ken Ashigbey says President Akufo-Addo should also issue an Executive Instrument (EI) to revoke all those licenses that were granted under the LI 2462.
The Coalition says it will write to the President to make this new demand in the coming days.
“Beyond just saying that you are revoking the LI, it is important that the President issues an EI [Executive Instrument] to revoke all the permits, the several permits that have been given for people to mine in forest reserves under this LI 2462. So we are going to be writing to the President to revoke all of those permits,” Dr. Ken Ashigbey announced in an interview monitored by The High Street Journal.

Justifying this new demand following the government concession to revoke the LI, Dr. Ken Ashigbey said the Coalition wants to ensure that, “People will not come back to us and say their permits were given them when the LI2462 was in existence. The president should also issue that EI that does not require anything from parliament to revoke all of these permits immediately.”

Commenting on the surprising u-turn by Organised Labour, the convener indicated that the development is a clear indication that the labour front has its own issues.
He therefore called on the media and the general public to support the coalition as they continue with the fight.
