The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has announced that government has fully settled all outstanding debts owed to the contractor working on the Ofankor–Nsawam highway.
The minister disclosed that a total of $77 million has been paid, clearing arrears that had previously stalled work on the critical road corridor.
“As of today, we don’t owe the contractor a penny. Every outstanding certificate that was raised before we assumed office has been fully paid. That financial burden was the main reason the contractor abandoned the site,” Mr. Agbodza said.
He stressed that with the financial hurdle now removed, government expects construction to advance without further setbacks, assuring motorists and residents that work will speed up in the coming months.
The announcement followed a project inspection by President John Mahama on Wednesday. During the tour, the President urged the contractor to stick to timelines and deliver quality work, warning that unnecessary delays would not be tolerated.
President Mahama revealed that the project has been placed under the government’s flagship Big Push Programme, which is designed to accelerate infrastructure delivery.
He said GH¢14 billion has already been allocated to the programme this year, with an additional GH¢30 billion earmarked for 2026, ensuring that resources remain available to sustain ongoing works.
The Ofankor–Nsawam road is one of the busiest highways in the Greater Accra Region, serving as a major link between the capital and other parts of the country.
Its rehabilitation is expected to ease traffic congestion, reduce travel time, and boost economic activity along the corridor.
