Government has reallocated GH¢400 million to acquire high-capacity buses for state-owned transport operators to improve public transportation and reduce congestion on major routes.
Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minister for Finance, said the investment would strengthen the fleets of Metro Mass Transit and the State Transport Company (STC).
He said the intervention formed part of government’s efforts to provide safe, reliable and affordable transport services for commuters.
According to the Minister, the additional buses would expand transport capacity along busy urban and intercity routes, reduce long passenger queues during peak periods and provide commuters with a dependable alternative to private vehicle use.
He said improved public transport would also support economic productivity by making daily commuting more efficient while easing pressure on existing transport services.
Dr Forson said the funding was being provided through expenditure realignment within the existing 2026 Budget and did not require supplementary appropriations.
