Over the past 20 years, the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation has poured nearly US$109.92 million into the development of communities surrounding its Tarkwa and Damang mines, delivering lasting social and economic impact, the company said.
Established in 2004, the Foundation has focused on critical areas such as infrastructure, education, enterprise development, health, training, conservation, sports, and arts and culture, aiming to improve living standards and economic opportunities in the Western Region’s mining corridors.
Infrastructure received the largest share of investment, totaling US$74.91 million, which funded roads, water systems, schools, and health facilities benefiting more than 19 host communities. Education initiatives followed with US$10.80 million, while enterprise development programmes, supporting local businesses and farming, received US$7.29 million. Health and wellbeing projects attracted US$5.06 million, complemented by US$4.88 million in skills development and training initiatives.
The Foundation also allocated funds to charitable giving and gifts-in-kind (US$2.71 million), conservation and environmental programmes (US$2.57 million), sports facilities (US$1.59 million), and arts and culture (US$0.11 million).

These projects have collectively enhanced the capacity, resilience, and quality of life of host communities, while supporting sustainable local development.
Beyond physical infrastructure, the Foundation has invested in vocational and technical training programmes, providing young people with marketable skills in mining-related trades, agriculture, and entrepreneurship.
Agricultural support initiatives, such as cocoa farmer training and input provision, have strengthened local livelihoods and bolstered community economic resilience.
The Foundation’s long-term investment strategy highlights a deliberate approach to shared value creation, ensuring that resource extraction is balanced with social upliftment, environmental stewardship, and inclusive economic growth.
Through nearly two decades of sustained support, the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation has become a key driver of community transformation, setting a benchmark for corporate social responsibility in Ghana’s mining sector.
