The Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS) has announced an exciting Black Friday promotion aimed at rewarding customers who shop using their gh-link payment cards. The promotion, which runs from October 25 to November 30, will reward shoppers at selected Melcom stores and China Mall outlets to walk away with special gifts simply by paying with their gh-link cards.
The initiative is part of GhIPSS’s broader effort to encourage the use of electronic payment systems, promoting a cash-lite economy in Ghana. The Black Friday promotion is designed to give gh-link cardholders a chance to benefit from their shopping experience during this November.
Shoppers who use their gh-link cards at designated Melcom outlets, including those in Accra (Achimota, Kaneshie, East Legon-boundary road), Kumasi (Adum and Santasi), and other major cities such as Takoradi, Sunyani, Ho, Wa, and Tamale, will automatically receive a gift with their purchase. Similarly, customers shopping at the two China Mall locations (New & Manet) on in Accra are also eligible for gifts.
In an interview, Akosua Blay, Head of Cards & Verified Payments explained that the promotion aims to reward existing users of the gh-link card and to create awareness of the existence of the gh-link card amongst bank customers as a card capable of being used on Point of Sale (POS) nationwide. “We want to show our appreciation to loyal gh-link cardholders while promoting the use of the gh-link card for payments” she stated.

The gh-link card is a domestic payment card issued by various banks in Ghana, identifiable by the gh-link logo embossed on the card. Like other bank cards, it can be used on Point of Sale (PoS) devices across a wide network of retail stores, including supermarkets and fuel stations, as well as on ATMs. gh-link cards are known for their lower transaction fees compared to other cards, making them a cost-effective option for users. Additionally, reconciliation challenges with gh-link cards are resolved more quickly due to their local nature.
The promotion not only serves as an incentive for shoppers but also aligns with GhIPSS’s goal of advancing Ghana’s cash-lite agenda. As the country sees a continued shift from cash to electronic payments, initiatives like this will play a key role in promoting digital transactions, especially during the high-volume shopping period leading up to the festive season.
GhIPSS has been a strong advocate for the use of electronic payment systems in Ghana, and the Black Friday promotion is a strategic move to boost the adoption of gh-link cards, reduce cash dependence, and improve the overall ease and safety of transactions across the country.
