Ghana’s economy expanded by 4.7 percent year-on-year in April 2026, according to the latest Monthly Indicator of Economic Growth (MIEG) released by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), marking a slowdown from the 7.4 percent growth recorded in the same month last year.
The MIEG index rose to 113.3 in April 2026, up from 108.2 a year earlier, reflecting what the GSS describes as a continued “upward trend” in aggregate economic activity, even as the pace of expansion eased compared with the previous year.
Presenting the figures, Government Statistician Alhassan Iddrisu noted that the MIEG, which tracks monthly economic performance across agriculture, industry and services, serves as an “early signal” of quarterly GDP trends.
The services sector remained the dominant force behind the headline figure, growing 6.0 percent year-on-year, albeit slower than the 15.1 percent recorded in April 2025. Services contributed 61.7 percent of overall growth, with the GSS attributing the sector’s continued expansion primarily to the Information and Communication subsector.
Industry posted a 4.0 percent year-on-year growth rate, a marked improvement from the 1.1 percent recorded in April 2025, contributing 29.9 percent to the overall expansion. The GSS attributed the sector’s performance to a “mining-led” recovery, describing industry as showing “signs of expansion” on the back of stronger mining activity. The industry index rose to 116.7 from 112.2 a year earlier.
Agriculture staged what was termed a “strong recovery,” rebounding to 1.7 percent growth in April 2026 from a contraction of 6.9 percent in April 2025. The sector, described as being “driven primarily” by the crops and livestock subsector, contributed 4.5 percent to overall growth. Net taxes on products added a further 3.9 percent to the headline figure.
Despite the moderation in growth relative to last year, GSS officials characterised the underlying trend as one of sustained expansion rather than a reversal, pointing to the index’s steady climb from a base of 96 in April 2023 to its current level of 113.3.
