Ghana’s iconic Kente textile has been officially inscribed onto UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, under the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This monumental achievement was announced by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MoTAC) in a statement signed by Minister Andrew Egyapa Mercer on December 5, 2024.
Kente, a hand-woven textile originating from the Asante and Ewe communities in Ghana, is renowned for its vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and deep symbolic meanings. The fabric, celebrated worldwide for its craftsmanship, represents the creativity, heritage, and identity of the Ghanaian people.
Minister Andrew Egyapa Mercer highlighted the cultural and historical significance of Kente, stating, “The inclusion of Kente in this prestigious list is a testament to our commitment to preserving our rich Ghanaian cultural traditions and sharing them with the world. It also reinforces Ghana’s position as a leader in cultural heritage preservation and promotion on the international stage.”

The Minister expressed gratitude to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and UNESCO for their support in achieving this recognition. He also commended the collaborative efforts of key stakeholders, including traditional authorities, artisans, cultural institutions, and implementing agencies, who played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting Kente.
Special acknowledgment was given to the communities of Bonwire and Agotime, who have long been custodians of the Kente tradition, ensuring that the craft is passed down through generations. MoTAC affirmed its commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s cultural heritage and promoting it both locally and globally.
“As we celebrate this historic moment, MoTAC reaffirms its dedication to promoting and preserving Ghana’s cultural heritage,” the statement concluded.
This UNESCO recognition not only honors Kente as a unique artistic and cultural treasure but also elevates Ghana’s cultural heritage on the world stage, strengthening its international cultural profile.
