Amidst the anti-immigrants protest in the UK, the Ghanaian community has been advised to stay indoors in order safeguard their security.
The anti-immigrants protest began at the ending part of last month. The protest was stoked by what has been explained as an anti-immigrant misinformation campaign after three children were stabbed to death in Southport, Northern England.
The incidents over the course of the days have turned violent as protesters have targeted locations designated for asylum seekers.
About 100 people, the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service says have been arrested and charged for involvement in the riots.
With tensions rising against immigrants, Ghana’s High Commissioner in the UK, Papa Owusu Ankomah has advised all Ghanaians to stay indoors after 7 pm so that they don’t get caught up in the middle of the riots.
The High Commissioner further indicated that checks by his office on the various Ghanaian communities have confirmed that no Ghanaian national has been affected by the protest. He therefore emphasized the need for all to be conscious of their safety in this period.
“Except for one incident where a Ghanaian reported being threatened while taking a bus, there have been no reports of any untoward incidents affecting Ghanaians in the UK,” Papa Owusu Ankomah confirmed.
He added that “even as of this morning, our officers are calling around the country speaking with the leadership of the Ghanaian communities, asking for updates and urging them to encourage Ghanaians in the UK to try and be indoors by 7 pm.”
