With 2025 fast approaching, many people in the country are purchasing ‘susu boxes’ in preparation for various savings challenges to begin on January 1.
These boxes, crafted from durable wood and metal, come in three sizes: the largest costing between 60 and 80 cedis, medium-sized boxes ranging from 20 to 40 cedis, and smaller options priced at 10 to 15 cedis. Vendors at markets across Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi are reporting brisk sales as residents flock to secure their boxes before the new year.
The rising interest in susu savings shows an urgent desire among Ghanaians to take charge of their finances amid rising inflation and economic uncertainty. Many savers are committing to structured challenges, including a “one cedi a day” plan and another where participants save an amount corresponding to the calendar day starting with one cedi on January 1 and increasing to 365 cedis on December 31.
These initiatives are a disciplined way to build financial resilience over the year.
Susu vendors like Adjoa Mansa, who operates a stall at Makola Market, described the unprecedented demand as “unlike anything seen in previous years.”
She noted that some customers buy multiple boxes for family members, while others choose larger boxes to accommodate their ambitious savings goals. “People are serious this time,” she said. “They want to see real progress in 2025.”
Despite the enthusiasm, challenges abound. Some participants are already concerned about their ability to remain consistent throughout the year, especially those aiming to follow the day-by-day savings plan. The financial strain of saving 365 cedis on the last day of the year has sparked debate, with critics suggesting that alternative strategies, such as weekly or monthly contributions, may be more realistic.
Psychologists and financial advisors are urging caution, reminding participants not to overcommit themselves. “The goal should be sustainability,” said Mr.Clement Appiah, a financial planner based in Accra.
“Start small, but remain consistent. The habit, not the amount, will change your financial situation.”
While some remain skeptical, the overwhelming optimism surrounding the initiative signals a collective yearning for financial discipline and growth in the coming year.
